First Quarter

END OF FIRST QUARTER: LSU 7, Alabama 0. First quarter stats below:

Screen Shot 2021-11-06 at 6.48.35 PM
  • Overall, a sloppy quarter for the Crimson Tide. Alabama really struggled to get anything going in the running game, and the two big special teams plays loom large.
  • Bryce Young uses his legs to get the first down as the quarter ends.
  • Two plays in a row are intended for Jameson Williams, but both fall incomplete. Alabama faces another third-and-long.
  • The Alabama defense forces a three and out of the Tigers, and Alabama will take over at the 31 still looking to get on the board for the first time.
  • LSU DB Dwight McGlothern was limping off the field after that last defensive possession for the Tigers. LSU is already running extremely thin at that position.
  • Bryce Young is sacked on third down, taking Alabama out of field goal range and forcing the Crimson Tide to punt for the second time today.
    • LSU’s been getting pretty consistent pressure on the Alabama offensive line in both run blocking and pass protection.
  • Already facing a third-and-long, Alabama takes a delay of game.
  • Bryce Young shows off some of his escapability and finds an open Cameron Latu for a first down.
  • JoJo Earle with a nice punt return across the 50 into LSU territory.
  • The second down play is ruled intentional grounding, so LSU is pushed back even further and faces third-and-20. Tigers are forced to punt.
  • Christian Harris sacks Max Johnson on first down. The Tigers are pinned deep in their own territory right in front of the Alabama student section.
  • Young completes a pass to Metchie on third down, but it is well short of the first down marker. Alabama is forced to punt after a three and out.
  • Chris Owens has now slid over to Center for Alabama, replacing Darrian Dalcourt. Damieon George Jr. is at right tackle for the Crimson Tide.
    • Dalcourt has headed to the locker room according to the TV broadcast.
  • Jameson Williams returns the kickoff out to the 28, and that’s where Alabama will begin its second offensive drive.
  • On third-and-short, LSU scores a touchdown. A eight-yard pass from Max Johnson to Brian Thomas Jr. gets the Tigers on the board first. LSU 7, Alabama 0, 8:33 1Q
    • The Tigers take advantage of the missed field goal by Alabama, and then use a special teams play of their own to drive down the field to take the early lead.
  • A holding penalty on Malachi Moore moves the Tigers down to the Alabama 16.
  • Out of a timeout, LSU fakes the punt, and with a little trickeration has a first down at the Alabama 26.
  • Today’s honorary captains from the 2011 team are running back Trent Richardson and safety Mark Barron.
  • After a first down on their first play from scrimmage, the Tigers can’t move any further and are forced to punt. Slade Bolden is back to receive for Alabama.
  • Freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry gets the start at corner for the Crimson Tide.
  • The kick from Will Reichard doinks off the cross bar and is no good. Alabama comes up empty on its first offensive possession. It looked like a bad snap affected the hold and eventually the kick.
  • A pass through traffic on third-and-two from the 32 falls incomplete. Nick Saban sends out the field goal unit for a 49-yard attempt.

Game Preview

It’s a game that, in a typical season, fans of both programs would have circled on their calendars. This year, though, things are a little different.

While Alabama is up to its usual success with a 7-1 overall record and a 4-1 record in SEC play, the same cannot be said for LSU. Through eight games, the Tigers are 4-4 with a 2-3 record in the conference.

In fact, the situation has been so rough in Baton Rouge that it has cost head coach Ed Orgeron his job less than two seasons after he led LSU to an undefeated year and national title.

All of that being said, it’s still Alabama vs LSU, and that still means something. While the rivalry might have taken a downward turn in intensity over the last two season, Crimson Tide fans still haven’t forgotten their team’s narrow loss in 2019. For the LSU faithful, it’s one of its final chances at redemption this season.

Who: LSU at Alabama

When: 6 p.m., Saturday

Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium

TV: Fubo.TV (Start with a 7-day free trial), ESPN

Series: The Crimson Tide leads the all-time series, 54-26-5. Under Nick Saban, Alabama has won 11 of the teams’ 15 meetings since his arrival in Tuscaloosa in 2007, including a 21-0 victory in the 2012 BSC National Championship Game.

Last time out: Both Alabama and LSU are coming off of bye weeks, but the two programs experienced very different outcomes in Week 8. The Crimson Tide handled the Tennessee Volunteers with relative ease, downing them 52-24 inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. For LSU, the Tigers experienced their third conference loss of the season, losing at Ole Miss 31-17.

The last time these two teams met was in the 10-game, conference-only season of 2020 that was abbreviated due to COVID-19. Alabama took the trip to Baton Rouge and deftly took care of business over LSU, 55-17. Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones completed 20-of-28 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns on the night, with Heisman Trophy-winner DeVonta Smith catching three of those touchdowns.

On the ground, running back Najee Harris rushed for 145 yards off of 21 carries and crossed the goal line three times.
