Yankees vs. Red Sox results: Early homers, strong start from Nathan Eovaldi propels Boston to AL wild-card win – Sporting News

The Red Sox are moving on.

Facing the rival Yankees, Boston jumped all over AL Cy Young candidate Gerrit Cole for two homers in the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead. A stellar outing from Nathan Eovaldi and shutdown performance from the bullpen kept the Yankee bats in check. New York scored solo home runs in the sixth and ninth innings, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Sox won the American League wild-card game 6-2 to move on to the ALDS.

They will face AL East rivals and the top team in the American League, the Rays.

Xander Bogaerts took a center-cut changeup to dead center for a two-run homer in the bottom of the first that sparked the Red Sox and put the team up early. Two innings later, Kyle Schwarber led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer to right. A single and a walk later chased Cole from the game.

Eovaldi was dialed in from there: He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just one run off a solo homer from Anthony Rizzo — one of four hits allowed — while striking out eight.

The Red Sox bullpen shut down New York from there. Ryan Brasier, Tanner Houck, Hansel Robles and Garrett Whitlock allowed just one more run, a homer in the top of the ninth off the bat of Joey Gallo, on two hits, no walks and three strikeouts across the final 3.2 innings of work.

The Boston bats kept going, however. Alex Verdugo doubled in the bottom of the sixth to drive in a run and respond to Rizzo’s blast; he later singled in the seventh to drive in two and break open the game at 6-1.
