Local skating rink celebrates National Skate Month – The Daily Universe – Universe.byu.edu

Put on your helmet and knee pads and lace up your roller skates because October is National Skate Month and one local skating joint in Orem is celebrating the occasion.

On Friday night, roller skating and blading fans flocked to Classic Skating for $1 Skate Night to kick off National Skate Month.

“I love skating, I come probably three to four times a week. I love it because it’s a family for me outside of my normal family,” advanced skater Brittley Ashcroft said.

During the month of October, Classic Skating in Orem is celebrating National Skating Month.

“Skating is such a culture here. I would describe it as like in high school when you and your friends have a spot to meet up at Classic is like the spot. Everyone can come,” Anne Lincoln, a member of Classic Skating’s marketing team, said.

Over the next month, skaters and bladers alike will be trying out their new tricks on the rink.

“I don’t really know many tricks, I kind of just like to go backwards just dance around. The jam line is pretty fun but it’s … I like to go slower so I do like my own little jam line on the inside,” roller skater Kade Earls said.

“Right now, probably though, my biggest trick is turning around and doing full 360s. So that’s pretty fun,” Ashcroft said.

Tricks and turns always come with a risk on skates, but falling down isn’t always a bad thing.

“Honestly, wiping out is a good indicator that you are trying new things, that you are pushing yourself,” Ashcroft said.

Classic Skating welcomes skaters of all levels from beginners to experts.

“When I moved out to Provo, I was kind of just bored and so I just figured I’d try roller skating, kind of off of a whim,” Earls said.

Not only does skating bring people of all skills together, but it also has great health benefits. The American Heart Association said that skating is one of the top exercises for heart health.

Even if you missed the $1 Skate Night, roll on over to Classic Skating throughout the whole month of October where you can get a milkshake and a skate night Thursday nights for Thirsty Thursdays, Friday night with Flashback Friday or attend Disco Saturdays.

Individuals can also snap a picture of them roller skating this month and post it using #rollerskatingmonth to observe National Skate Month.
