The past year and a half of COVID has forced communities to create activities outside for people to enjoy. Especially in the winter.
This coming winter, Mt. Pleasant will have an outdoor skating rink set up at Island Park for the first time in decades.
The city commission approved about $25,000 be spent on building and maintaining the rink.
It will be unsupervised and skaters will have to bring their own skates but an option for the community to enjoy the winter months outdoors.
“The idea behind this rink is because our ice rink out east, our indoor rink not run by the city, that facility has very limited open skate times,” said Philip Biscorner, Mt. Pleasant’s Parks Director, “So we will have the complete opposite. It’ll all be open skate so that it can be more of an introductory learning type thing.”
The rink will be built in the next month but will not be able to open until five consecutive days with the temperature in the 20’s.
