Dan, 16 set to compete in BMX World Championships – Lancashire Telegraph

A Haslingden student has secured a place in the BMX World Championships.

Sixteen-year-old Dan Wilson will head to the Championships in France next summer two years after he should have gone to Texas, until Covid forced the competition’s cancellation.

Dan, a student in Year 11 at Haslingden High School, has been riding BMX bikes for six years and currently races for the Preston team BMX Widow.

In the national 2021 BMX Championships he was fourth in the country, with the top eight going through to the World Championships.

He said: “I still had to wait for a post on the Team GB website to confirm my place and when it came up there was my name; I was happy to get on the team.”

Dan owns six bikes, two BMX, two mountain bikes, a road bike and a park bike which is a bit like a stunt bike.

He goes to the Preston track three days a week to train and spends another day doing physical exercise.

Dan said: “I try to get out on my bikes as much as possible and do a bit of everything including mountain biking and road riding.

“I would like to think I could get into the quarter-finals of the World Championships or even the semi-final, you really have to go for the win, but it is quite competitive.

“I don’t want to do it for a career though, instead I want to follow my own pathway and plan to become an RAF pilot and, after service, get my commercial licence.”

Dan’s sister Aimee, 17, a student at Holy Cross College, Bury, also got a place in the world championships, but is not taking part because of studies.
