Astros vs. Braves final score, results: Atlanta wins first World Series since 1995 behind three homers, shutout – Sporting News

For the first time since 1995, the Commissioner’s Trophy is heading back to Atlanta.

The Braves might not have been able to clinch the World Series title in their home ballpark, but they wasted little time in Houston establishing that they would end the series in six games. The Braves hit three home runs, including a moonshot by Jorge Soler, to power the offense to seven runs — the second time the team scored that many runs at Houston in three games.

The offensive outpouring was more than enough for Max Fried and the Braves bullpen, who shut out Houston to win Game 6 7-0 and claim the team’s fourth World Series title.

GAME 5: Maldonado plays hero | Braves rest top relievers

Soler, who also hit the go-ahead home run in Game 4, continued his postseason heroics in the third with his no-doubt blast to left. He sent it 446 feet, sending it over the train tracks in left to give Atlanta the lead.

Dansby Swanson was the next to join in the homer parade. In the top of the fifth, he lined one into the Crawford Boxes with a runner on to put Atlanta up 5-0. After Soler walked with two out in the inning, Freddie Freeman doubled off the left-center wall to make it a 6-0 game. Freeman added one more to Atlanta’s total with a solo shot to dead center in the seventh.

MORE: Fried, three other struggling stars will help shape series’ outcome

The last time he pitched in Houston, Fried labored through five innings as he allowed six earned runs on seven hits. He was on his A-game on Tuesday. Fried pitched six shutout innings, striking out six and allowing just four hits to Houston.

Ace reliever Tyler Matzek came in and pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, with four strikeouts. Closer Will Smith entered in the ninth and slammed the door.
