Evgeni Malkin resumed skating earlier this month — a significant step in his recovery from offseason knee surgery, multiple NHL and Penguins sources told The Athletic.
Malkin was spotted by media skating before the Penguins’ practiced Monday at UPMC Sports Complex. The on-ice sessions are part of a recovery phase in which Malkin is re-acclimating his lower body to the motion and feel of skating, sources said.
Malkin, 35, is still not expected to play before at least early-to-mid December, sources said. Malkin does hope to have at least a few weeks of games with the Penguins under him before presumably joining Russian Olympic athletes for the men’s hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Games.
Injured Penguins captain Sidney Crosby (wrist) and winger Bryan Rust (upper body) also did not practice Monday.
