Astros vs. Braves final score, results: Early outpouring of runs delivers Atlanta win in Game 1 – Sporting News

Jorge Soler, who appeared in only the final two games of the NLCS as a pinch hitter after missing several games due to a positive COVID-19 test, didn’t show any rust in his first at-bat in Game 1 of the World Series.

On the third pitch of the night, he became the first player ever to lead off the World Series with a home run. Atlanta added another in the first, one more in the second and two more on an Adam Duvall homer in the third to take an early 5-0 lead in Houston.

The Astros were able to scratch across a pair after Braves’ ace Charlie Morton was forced to exit the game with a fractured right fibula, but the Braves bullpen still held them to just two runs across the final six innings of the game as Atlanta won Game 1 of the World Series 6-2.

From early on, it was clear Astros southpaw Framber Valdez did not have his best stuff. Aside from the leadoff home run, he allowed Ozzie Albies to reach on an infield single two batters later, and then let Austin Riley to rope a double 115.8 mph off the bat to score the team’s second run.

The Braves then reached base four times in the second on three singles and a walk, with Travis d’Arnaud scoring on a fielder’s choice from Soler to make it a 3-0 lead. Then, after a leadoff single by NLCS MVP Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall cranked a 387-foot homer to left to make it a 5-0 game and chase Valdez.

While the offensive outpouring for the Braves was a welcome sight for Atlanta fans, what happened in the second was not. Morton took a 102.4 mph liner off the bat of Yuli Gurriel that hit Morton in his right leg. While he was able to record three more outs, he was forced to leave the game, with X-rays later confirming he would miss the remainder of the World Series with a fractured right fibula.
