Charlie Donaldson now knows this to be true. The 7-year-old Stony Plain BMX rider has won what’s known as the ‘Triple Crown’ of supercross racing for the 2021 season.

“As a parent, it’s pretty cool to see your kid work so hard and watch (BMX) be her thing,” said Donaldson’s mother Jolene Burke.

She placed first in the ‘Alberta Cup’ series, the provincial series, and the national series. Even more impressive, she is one of two Stony Plain BMX riders to accomplish this feat; the other being Brady Mitschke.

A naturally athletic child, Donaldson learned to ride a bicycle when she was three years old. In no time, she ditched her training wheels and began crashing the skatepark scene on her princess deckled bike. Shortly thereafter, her aspirations for riding developed as she would pass by Stony Plain BMX on her way to dance class in the back seat of her parent’s car. Her mother said Charlie would ask to take her bike to the club every time they drove by.

“She’s always been a bit of a wild child and a daredevil so we went to an open house, signed up, and never looked back. Nothing has stuck the way BMX has,” said Burke.

Donaldson immediately took a shining to her five-day-per-week training schedule but said her favourite part about BMX is racing. She was named ‘Rookie of the Year’ her first season with the club. At the end of last season, she set a personal goal to win nationals this year.

“My entire family races but she’s the one that puts in the time and works the hardest,” said Burke.

Having reached such heights so soon in her BMX career, Donaldson now has her sights set on competitions outside the country. Being a national champion, she is hoping to represent Team Canada at next summer’s BMX World Championships in Nantes, France. This winter, if border restrictions ease, she would also like to participate in a handful of USA BMX competitions in Arizona and Nevada.

“We want to see how she does down there. Racing in the states is a good indicator of where your child is at. We can only ride a few months out of the year here where there you can ride 12 months out of the year. It’s a good way to keep her legs moving,” said Burke.
