As workers complete one major project, construction crews have started another in Recreation Park on the West Side of Binghamton.
Excavation is underway for an ice skating rink near Beethoven Street. It will be larger than the temporary rink that was installed at the park two years ago.
Mayor Richard David said “there was a huge demand” for that skating facility but many people viewed it as too small.
The temporary rink was set up at Cheri Lindsey Park on the city’s North Side last winter.
David said the new Rec Park tennis complex and improvements related to the project are expected to cost more than $1 million. He estimated the new ice rink’s price tag at about $370,000.
Speaking on WNBF Radio’s Binghamton Now program, David said work on the tennis courts should be completed within the next week or so.
Workers from Astroturf Corporation’s Syracuse unit have been painting markings on the courts this week.
The tennis courts will be named in memory of Harper Stantz, a Binghamton High School student who died after she was struck by a vehicle while walking home from the park.

RANKED: Here are the most popular national parks
LOOK: Here are the best lake towns to live in
Many of the included towns jump out at the casual observer as popular summer-rental spots–the Ozarks’ Branson, Missouri, or Arizona’s Lake Havasu–it might surprise you to dive deeper into some quality-of-life offerings beyond the beach and vacation homes. You’ll likely pick up some knowledge from a wide range of Americana: one of the last remaining 1950s-style drive-ins in the Midwest; a Florida town that started as a Civil War veteran retirement area; an island boasting some of the country’s top public schools and wealth-earners right in the middle of a lake between Seattle and Bellevue; and even a California town containing much more than Johnny Cash’s prison blues.
