Pigeon’s Roller Rink Opens as a Pop-Up Skate Venue for the Thriving So Cal Roller Skate Community – California News Times

Like most action sports, roller skating popularity has risen dramatically during the pandemic, but the year before this new wave of skating boom wasn’t very sport-friendly. In 2020, two notorious roller skating rinks in Los Angeles were closed, leaving only one full-time roller skating rink throughout the county. But now that rolling skating is back and Southern California has more skaters than in decades, the general demand for truly private venues for roller skaters is greater than in any era since the 1970s. I am. Fortunately, Shayna “Pigeon” Meikle has been working on just that.

Pigeon is a LAUSD science teacher and quit his studies in 2013 to pursue his passion for roller skating. She founded Beach Cities Roller Derby in 2012 and now runs the Pigeons Roller Skating Shop in Long Beach, California, where she keeps track of the skate community.

“The rink was closed and the skaters were kicked off the basketball and tennis courts … You can skate outside, but it’s not always safe for everyone.”

It didn’t take long for the lease manager at Premium Retail Center 2nd & PCH to get in touch once she started looking for a new link location. They contacted Pigeon about a beautiful 8,000 sq ft outdoor vacancy. After going around the polished concrete floor, she found this to be the perfect place for pop-up links.

The 2nd & PCH Property is an outdoor mall that opened in 2019 with the vision of becoming the ultimate gathering place, providing the community with a sophisticated retail and dining experience, at least for a limited time, with eight wheels thrilling. Provides entertainment. Pigeons Rollerlink takes up space for a 4-month reserve vacancy (pop-up) and may stay forever.

Skating classes, public skating sessions and private parties are held at the Roller venue. The variety of classes offered includes, but is not limited to: Skating fitness, roller derby, beginner skating lessons, dance and choreography, artistic skating, kids club. The location includes a small store of accessories, merchandise and repair equipment, but get skates at Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop on 4th Street Retro Row in Long Beach, a local skate shop. Pigeon’s team has been a valuable resource for the roller skating community since 2013 and is excited to enjoy this space with the community this fall.
