Keswick BMX rider earns podium spot at Calgary nationals, berth at 2022 worlds – Toronto Star

Keswick's Ryan Chabrzynski (lelft) finished second in his category at the Canadian national BMX championships held Aug. 28 in Calgary.

When COVID-19 protocols put his team sports like hockey and lacrosse on hold, Ryan Chabrzynski wasn’t about to spin his wheels in one place.

Instead, the Keswick teen hopped on his bike and began pedalling all the way to a silver medal in his age category at the Canadian BMX national championships held Aug. 28 in Calgary.

It was an impressive showing by the 14-year-old who has been participating in the sport for less than a full year. He also overcame a broken hand and was cleared to ride only at the end of July.

In all, Chabrzynski competed in six races in the Challenge 14 boys category which started with 35 riders in the field. The Stouffville BMX Club rider won all three preliminary round heats before winning in quarter-final and semifinal rounds.

Also a member of the Haro Canada BMX team, he placed second to Alberta’s Nico Diaz in the final.

The second-place showing also qualified Chabrzynski for a berth at the 2022 BMX World Cycling Championships in Nantes, France.

The triple-A hockey player and member of the Newmarket Redbirds lacrosse program has been racing since last September.

He is scheduled to start Grade 9 classes at Keswick High School.
