LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hundreds of BMX bikers are in Louisville for the Nationals circuit competition.

Even the practice runs were gnarly to watch as hundreds of BMX bikers are in Louisville racing for points. The USA BMX event will culminate later this year with the Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That’s where 13-year-old Riley Allen is hoping to be over Thanksgiving. The South Carolina native said he’s improved a lot from a year ago.
“I’ve gotten a lot faster since last year. My gates have gotten a lot better,” Allen told Spectrum News 1.
Allen is at the event with his dad, Matt, who introduced him to BMX racing several years ago.
“I took him to the track in Rock Hill (South Carolina) years ago because I used to race when I was a kid and he was like, ‘I want to try it, Dad.’ So, got him on a bike and threw him out there and he fell in love with riding his bike,” Matt said.

The rain pushed in by the remnants of Hurricane Ida earlier in the week seemed to have no impact on the part dirt and part asphalt track. Practice runs began Thursday and bikers were whipping through the course without issue.
The morning began with the adult class. Riley hit his first run just after 11 a.m. Thursday.
“There’s usually a different number of turns, but usually four turns and four straight aways,” Riley explained.
He said he’s been riding and competing for about four years. Derby City BMX has been around for many more years than that. In fact, this Louisville course is a regular on the USA BMX Nationals circuit.
