New BMX Track Set To Open For State Meet In Late August – CapeNews.net

A new BMX track on Quaker Meetinghouse Road in South Sandwich is scheduled to open ahead of a state meet at the end of August, despite summer weather delays.

The motocross course, which is on a 7.5-acre plot of land behind the Pop Warner Football Field, was moved from Joint Base Cape Cod and has to be ready to host the meet on August 21.

But work is still underway.

“They’re doing very well but they still have some earth-moving that needs to happen,” said assistant town manager Heather B. Harper at the selectmen’s meeting last Thursday, August 5. “A couple of weeks ago, they had a USA BMX Track designer out there.”

The well-supported community project began in May, after base officials announced they were looking into other uses of the acreage that has been home to the track for the past 30 years.

“There is a very big state BMX meet coming up on the 21 of August that they have to be ready for,” said board member David J. Sampson. “I guess this is a big deal.”

Last week, trenches were put in for lighting equipment and dirt from the base is being brought over by the truckload. Before transport started, Tammy A. Gibbs, president and track manager for Cape Cod BMX, estimated around 600 truckloads of dirt would need to be moved.

To help pack down the 7,000 cubic yards of dirt, riders are volunteering to practice on the track and harden up the ground, Mr. Sampson said.

Although the main goal is to be operational ahead of the state meet, the track will host a grand reopening event in September when the public can come check out the track.

Ms. Gibbs plans to operate the track each year from April to December; practices will be held during the week until 8 PM and regional or state events will be held on the weekend until 9 PM, she said.

“The effort these last few months for this volunteer-based operation is incredible,” Mr. Sampson said.
