“This is always an exciting weekend for the club to host this huge event and to share the gems Cochrane has to offer,” said Lucy Lovelock, who wears many hats on the board of the Cochrane BMX club.

Cochrane last hosted the Grands back in 2019, and the club was set to host Provincials last year, but were delayed with the pandemic.

“Our Cochrane riders have been training hard and this past weekend some of them attended the Calgary Nationals and are coming home with over 20 N plates. To achieve an N plate you are one of the top 8 in your age group in the country. They all rode so well and to even race in the Nationals event is a great achievement,” said Lovelock.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the BMX community to Cochrane and hope this brings a boost to our local businesses that have been so supportive to our club and this event.”

Lovelock says BMX was on the rise until 2020 when, like most things, it was shut down for a while before the club managed to run smaller events.

“Some BMX’ers went and tried different things like mountain biking, and road biking and that’s awesome because at the end of the day if kids are active and engaged in a sport then that’s a good thing.
BMX is such an affordable sport and has such a great, supportive community. We expect to see our numbers grow again next season and we hope we can welcome more new riders to the club.

“The organization needed to put on an event, and the Provincials is pretty intense and the board and our club members have been hard at work getting the track and the grounds ready.

“We have had members up at the track all hours of the day and night, to ensure things will be ready and we couldn’t do it without our amazing BMX family. Everyone pulls together when it’s needed and gets the job done,” she said.

The Alberta race series takes place on tracks throughout Alberta and will host eight races and one Grand Final Race. Racers must compete in at least four events plus the final to qualify for the year-end awards.

Racers that qualify for a year-end award will be awarded a Provincial Ranking and a Provincial number (racing) plate.

The Provincial Series is a series open to all with a UCI license but only Alberta residents may qualify for year-end awards. Registration fees and travelling expenses are the responsibility of the racer.
