Elgin activist Marcus Banner is looking to help fill the gap of needs the city’s children and families face with the upcoming return to school during his annual Back to School Festival at the O.N.E. Fitness Center on Sunday.
“Since we have a loving and giving city where they are going to be giving out backpacks and school supplies, O.N.E. Fitness Center wanted to do something different,” Banner said in announcing the event on his Facebook page.
Instead of the school-specific supplies that will be available at several other events around the city, Banner and a team of donors and volunteers are giving away Jordan and Yeezy shoes and $20 gift cards to a variety of establishments through a free raffle all attendees can participate in.
There will also be food, music and entertainment at the event, as well as local vendors selling their unique goods.
“We’re going to have all the fun and games and bouncy houses,” Banner said. “It’s all about giving the kids one last day of fun.”
The raffle tickets are free, but you must be present to win any of the prizes.
The Elgin Police Department will support the event with an ice cream cart from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Kane County Public Health Department will be on hand to provide free Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. No identification is necessary to get a vaccine shot. Those who receive a shot will be able to get the second dose of the vaccine, also for free, on Sept. 6.
The festival begins at 2 p.m. The O.N.E. Fitness Center, which is also celebrating its second anniversary, is at 24 Tyler Creek Plaza, just off McLean Boulevard on the west side of Elgin.
