Pete Alonso just made it look too easy on Monday night.
The Mets first baseman set the record for the most home runs in a Home Run Derby first round. He didn’t need extra time to win the second round. And in the finals, he hit each of the first six pitches he saw in his bonus time for home runs to walk off Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini and claim his second straight derby crown.
Each round, Alonso put on a show. He led off against Royals catcher Salvador Perez with 35 homers in the opening round. After Nationals outfielder Juan Soto kicked off the second round with 15 — fresh off a thrilling win over Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani — Alonso passed his NL East opponent with 16 homers.
In the finals, Alonso met up with Mancini. A year after he beat Stage III colon cancer, Mancini thrilled the crowd, launching 24 homers as the first batter up in the derby. He beat Athletics first baseman Matt Olson and then walked off the hometown hero, Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, with 13 homers to Story’s 12.
Coming into the clash at Coors Field, everyone expected to see Ohtani, the No. 1 seed, carry the night. And he did excite in the first round, tying up Soto after a slow start and forcing two swing-offs before Soto ultimately won the first-round clash by hitting all three pitches of the second swing-off out for home runs. Ohtani grounded the first pitch he saw in the final swing-off.

Home Run Derby live updates, highlights from 2021 contest
(All times Eastern)
11:02 p.m.: How far did Alonso hit these home runs? Pretty far.
10:45 p.m.: Alonso hits each of the first six pitches he sees for home runs to reclaim his title. He is the third batter ever to win the Home Run Derby twice in a row, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (1998-99) and Yoenis Cespedes (2013-14).
10:43 p.m.: Six to win, five to tie. Alonso has a minute of time to reach Mancini’s 22 total.
10:40 p.m.: Alonso uses a timeout with 36 seconds left. He’s up to 12 homers and has a minute of bonus time.
10:39 p.m.: Alonso launches his first three very fast. He’s already got his extra minute of bonus time.
10:34 p.m.: That’s 22 home runs by Mancini. Now it’s up to Alonso to match him. Reminder: These are only two-minute rounds, though batters can earn an extra minute with a 475-foot homer.
10:31 p.m.: What a show by Mancini to start off this final round. He’s got a minute left to swing with 17 home runs already.
10:29 p.m.: Five home runs and a timeout. Mancini is taking some quick hacks in this two-minute final round. He has 1:17 left to hit, not including bonus time.
10:28 p.m.: Mancini will take his final swings in the Home Run Derby to set the tone for the final round.
Round 2 updates
10:22 p.m.: Easy. Alonso makes it look easy. He clubs 16 home runs to match up against Mancini in the finals.
10:21 p.m.: He is simply unbelievable. Alonso hits 14 home runs before calling a timeout. Only seven swings didn’t leave the yard. He needs two more with 1:03 left in his regular time.
10:19 p.m.: Alonso’s first home run is a liner, and the second one is way back onto the concourse. He’s already earned his bonus time with five long balls.
10:17 p.m.: Alonso will need to hit 15 home runs to tie and 16 home runs to win after Soto wraps up his time.
10:14 p.m.: Soto has a full minute of bonus time available after hitting 11 during his regular time.
10:11 p.m.: Soto uses his timeout with 1:46 left in his round. He’s got seven long balls so far.
10:10 p.m.: Soto will lead this semifinal matchup off against Pete Alonso.
10:03 p.m.: Mancini knocks out Story. He hits 13 in his second round — no extra time needed — to advance to the finals.
10:01 p.m.: Mancini calls a timeout with 1:39 remaining. He’s got seven home runs. He’s got the 30 seconds of bonus time, but he needs one more over 475 to get the full minute of bonus time.
9:58 p.m.: Mancini will have to hit 13 home runs to top Story, who hit 12 in his second round.
9:56 p.m.: The Rockies shortstop gets only 30 seconds of extra time after launching 10 home runs.
9:53 p.m.: Story takes a timeout with 1:28 left. He’s up to five home runs.
9:52 p.m.: Story taking his hacks first.
Round 1 updates
9:50 p.m.: During that thrilling first round, Soto hit a home run 520 feet, the longest of the derby so far. Story at 518 and Alonso at 514 are second and third.
9:45 p.m.: All the underdogs are moving on. No. 5 Pete Alonso vs. No. 8 Juan Soto and No. 6 Trey Mancini vs. No. 7 Trevor Story.
9:43 p.m.: Ohtani’s first swing is a groundball. Soto stuns the two-way phenom and moves on to face Alonso in the second round.
9:42 p.m.: Three-for-three. Soto throws up a perfect frame.
9:40 p.m.: Second swing is gone.
9:40 p.m.: First swing by Soto is a homer.
9:38 p.m.: This matchup is headed to another swing-off. Ohtani slugs six homers to tie Soto. The Nationals outfielder will get the first three swings to hit as many homers as he can.
9:36 p.m.: Soto at 28 home runs as he picks up some late steam. Ohtani needs to hit six in order to force a three-swing swing-off.
9:35 p.m.: Soto leading off the one minute swing-off.
9:32 p.m.: Ohtani ties it up with a minute of extra time. Three of those went more than 500 feet. Soto and Ohtani are going to swing-off.
9:30 p.m.: The last home run by Ohtani went 513 feet, and he’s up to 16 with a minute of extra time. Will he catch Soto at 22?
9:28 p.m.: Ohtani calls a timeout with 1:20 left. He’s only got five home runs, but he’s finding some momentum here with four homers in his past six swings.
9:27 p.m.: It isn’t until the 10th swing that Ohtani hits a home run.
9:23 p.m.: The 22-year-old Nationals phenom hits 22 home runs. Will it be enough to beat Ohtani?
9:20 p.m.: Soto will get the extra minute of bonus time. He hits 18 before the break.
9:18 p.m.: Soto takes a timeout with nine home runs.
9:16 p.m.: Juan Soto hoping to get off to a quick start against Shohei Ohtani. He’s got seven in the first minute, including one at 520 feet to right field.
9:13 p.m.: Perez hits seven straight home runs to wrap up the round. He would have beat almost any other batter so far. The only problem? Alonso was not any other batter.
9:11 p.m.: Perez had a strong first round, hitting 17 home runs at an average distance of 456 feet. He gets an extra minute to swing, but he’ll need to hit 18 more in order to tie Alonso.
9:08 p.m.: Perez hits five straight home runs, but with 1:44 left, he takes a timeout at only nine home runs. He’s got a long way to go to catch the “Polar Bear.”
9:06 p.m.: Alonso’s 35 home runs were a record for the first round of a derby. This format is a minute shorter than last year.
9:05 p.m.: Pete. Alonso. 35 home runs in the first round. Royals catcher Salvador Perez has a massive mountain to climb if he’s going to be the first catcher to win the Home Run Derby.
9:02 p.m.: Alonso is now up to two home runs over 510 feet as he hits another 514 feet. He’s averaging 455 feet, and he hits 25 before he reaches his minute of extra time.
9:00 p.m.: Pete Alonso destroyed those baseballs. One went 512 feet, and another over 490 feet. He takes a timeout with 13 home runs.
8:58 p.m.: The reigning champ is up. He’s already clubbed two in the first 15 seconds.
8:55 p.m.: Story will face Mancini in the second round of the Home Run Derby.
8:52 p.m.: Gallo goes on a run in his extra minute, but he falls one home run short at 19. Forty percent of his swings left the yard.
8:50 p.m.: The Rangers slugger will need nine to tie Story with a minute of extra time.
8:49 p.m.: Gallo earns the extra minute of time for him, but he has yet to reach double-digit totals with under a minute to go.
8:47 p.m.: Gallo calls a timeout with 1:44 left. He’s up to four so far. He’s already hit one more than 475 feet, but he’ll need to find his rhythm to catch Story at 20.
8:46 p.m.: There aren’t many players with the kind of raw power Gallo has. He’s got one through the first 30 seconds.
8:43 p.m.: The Rockies shortstop hits 20 long balls. Now, it’s time for Joey Gallo.
8:41 p.m.: Story will get an extra minute of bonus time. He’s racked up 16 home runs, and most of those were crushed.
8:39 p.m.: Story takes his timeout. Longest home run for him went 518 feet.
. @Tstory2 ‘s 518 ft homer is the longest tracked in the #HRDerby by Statcast, passing Aaron Judge (513 ft) in 2017.

8:38 p.m.: Wondering what happened to that fan that made the incredible catch on Olson’s home run? Sporting News’ Ryan Fagan caught up with the fan who made the grab.
8:37 p.m.: The hometown hitter is up to plate, and he’s already electrifying the crowd. He’s sending some home runs a long way.
8:35 p.m.: Mancini is moving on to the second round after putting on a show early.
8:33 p.m.: What would have been home run No. 24 sailed just to the right of the foul pole. Mancini will advance to the next round with 24 homers to Olson’s 23.
8:32 p.m.: Olson is now up to 22 with 10 seconds left.
8:31 p.m.: Olson will have a minute to catch Mancini. He needs seven to force a swing-off and eight to take the lead outright.
8:28 p.m.: The A’s first baseman isn’t moving at a particularly fast rate, but he’s making the most of his swings, hitting homers on 59 percent of his cuts. He takes a timeout with 10 homers clobbered already. His longest so far is 472 feet, and he has already earned his bonus time.
8:27 p.m.: Matt Olson is starting up.
8:25 p.m.: Mancini uses his extra minute of time to send 24 baseballs over the fence. His longest home run was 496 feet, according to the broadcast. What a start to this derby. Now, it’s up to Matt Olson to top that.
8:24 p.m.: First swing back is a home run. Now he’s got another one to make it 21 homers total.
8:22 p.m.: The timeout really did the trick for Mancini. He hits 58 percent of his swings for home runs and finishes with 19 homers. Four of them went at least 475 feet, which means he’ll get an extra minute of bonus time.
8:21 p.m.: Mancini is spraying these all over the field. He’s on a roll right now, running his streak up to five straight homers to reach 14 total long balls.
8:20 p.m.: Mancini hits his third and fourth on the second and third swings back from the timeout. He’s looking comfortable now.
8:19 p.m.: Mancini uses his timeout 53 seconds into his round. He’ll get a 30-second break in the action.
8:18 p.m.: And we are underway. Mancini is quickly up to two home runs already.
8:13 p.m.: This year, the format will be changed. There will be three-minute at-bats instead of four.
8:02 p.m.: Think this guy is ready for the derby?
8:00 p.m.: It is time for the Home Run Derby. Without the use of a humidor at Coors Field, expect to see some home runs hit a long way.
