This past May 15, we learned that Nick Jonas had “cracked a rib” in some sort of bike accident—now, we know exactly how it happened.
The 28-year-old pop star didn’t divulge many details at the time, but it all became clear on July 21 with the primetime release of a TV special called Olympic Dreams, in which the Jonas Brothers were coached and competed in hurdles on the track, gymnastics, and BMX racing.
While Nick Jonas also took a minor spill going over the hurdles in an earlier segment of filming, he soon learned that racing on a BMX track is “no joke” (in his brother Kevin’s words) either: In the definitive race between the brothers, Nick Jonas wiped out hard, fracturing a rib and bruising his tailbone.
“When you think about BMX, you think riding a bike. Most of us can ride bikes, but this is a different level,” Nick Jonas said in the special before hitting the track, according to USA Today.
To bring the brothers up to speed on the ins and outs of the sport, they recruited the help of two-time world champion and Rio Games silver medalist Alise Willoughby—who’s deservedly headed to the Olympics once again.
After some drills and practice laps under the guidance of Willoughby—including learning how to pump the bike, jump rollers, and ride berms—the Jonas Brothers took to the track for their first official race.
Unfortunately, Nick crashed right after the first turn in the lap, after really gunning for it and having his front wheel wash out underneath him. This caused the other two brothers to fall as well, but luckily they weren’t injured.
“I think the tape speaks for itself. I always give 110 percent, and sometimes that gets you the gold,” Jonas said later after the crash. “In this case, it got me a fractured rib, a bruised tailbone, and a hospital dinner. But I’m recovering.”
Jonas is as good as gold now, though no one ended up claiming that medal in the JoBros Olympics BMX race.
