How’s your fitness going? Whether you’re stuck in an exercise rut of doing the same workouts week after week and not seeing the progress you want, are worn out from your workouts, or are struggling to make time for workouts, incorporating each of these key areas of exercise into your workout routine can help you make progress.
The five fitness fundamentals we’ll focus on are:
- Cardiovascular exercise (aka cardio)
- Strength training
- Flexibility and mobility
- Recovery
- Mental toughness
These areas of fitness are the ones that will collectively help you meet exercise goals (like training for a cycling race, a marathon, or a challenge at your local gym), as well as help you fight off chronic health problems and age well, says Lynn Grieger, RDN, an ACSM-certified personal trainer and Everyday Health medical reviewer. “If we leave out any of these areas we’re not giving ourselves full opportunity to improve health and fitness.”
We’ll take you through all of them here.
Each week during the Gold Medal Fitness Challenge, we’ll focus on a different fundamental and show you how to make it part of your workout routine — exercisers of all levels (even the absolute beginners out there) are welcome!
In the meantime, here’s what you should know about these core areas of fitness:
