Momiji Nishiya Wins Women’s Skateboarding Street, USA’s Alexis Sablone Finishes Fourth – NBC 6 South Florida

At just 13 years old, Japan’s Momiji Nishiya skated into history Sunday night by winning the first-ever women’s Olympic street skateboarding event in Tokyo.

Nishiya helped the host nation sweep both the street competitions after Yuto Horigome won gold in the men’s event the previous day.

Brazil’s Rayssa Leal and Japan’s Funa Nakayama took silver and bronze, respectively, in the women’s event.

American Alexis Sablone finished fourth after scoring 13.57 points.

Sablone, a seven-time X Games medalist (winning in 2015, 2012 and 2010), grew up in Connecticut and started skateboarding at 10.

She has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Columbia and took a hiatus from contests to pursue a master’s degree at MIT.

Fellow Americans Mariah Duran and Alana Smith had solid showings in the preliminary round before missing the cut for the final.
