Hubbard’s native prepares for his first trip to the Olympics by training in Cleveland.
Cleveland — Among the new events at the Tokyo Olympics is BMX Freestyle. And the natives of northeastern Ohio are looking to win their first gold medal at the event.
Nick Bruce is from Hubbard, Trumbull County, but trains in Cleveland. He has loved biking since he was a child.
“The first memory of riding a bike was that my brother took off the training wheels on my little 12-inch Batman bike. He pushed me down the driveway hill,” Bruce recalls. “And that was the first day I rode without training wheels, and I’ve loved it ever since.”
Bruce’s love for biking has put him on hold for college education at Youngstown State University in order to pursue a professional BMX career. “I was traveling too much, and I had to skip so many classes that it didn’t even make sense to go to college anymore,” Bruce says. Bruce never looked back after winning the Free Flow Amateur Series event in Ocean City, Maryland at the age of 21.
Bruce explained some things to keep in mind when competing in the Tokyo Olympics for those unfamiliar with BMX freestyle. “BMX Freestyle gives you a minute to attack the course, all these different ramps and obstacles. To run them and run them perfectly so that you can speed up and land. You have to perform the most difficult and most difficult tricks, and you’re really looking for an overall use of the judge course. ”
Bruce understands the potential for a gold medal in Tokyo after a successful BMX professional circuit career. “Gold medal means the world. It’s a good way to seal all the hard work and energy, blood, sweat and tears traded in this sport. Just having it, you It really reaches the pinnacle of sport. I think it’s a really big honor. I think it only means the world to me. “
