Thousands of BMX bike riders from around the world are in Pittsburgh for this weekend’s championship race. The Stars and Stripes National Championship is being held on the South Park BMX Track. The licensed international event attracts riders as young as 3 years old. Racers say the track is challenging and the competition is fierce. “It’s a good tradition. As far as I can remember, we’ve done it,” said assistant truck operator Jason Stevens. “I started racing in 1980 and it has been going on for a long time.” This year’s event was attended by some of the top riders in the country. “It’s always nice to see all the little kids here chasing their dreams. In professional class,” he said. Jack Davis of Australia hosted the first national event in 1980.
