Best friends Charlie Biggs, 17, and Nolan Cardwell, 17, have been racing at BMX competitions since they were little kids.
Their hard work and dedication to the sport earned them a spot at the upcoming BMX World Championships at Papendal, The Netherlands.
“It is pretty cool that we both made it to the championships while living a mile away,” said Cardwell of Belmont.
Cardwell and Biggs will be part of the 18 juniors selected for the U.S. team.
Cardwell’s and Bigg’s friendship became stronger after discovering their common passion for the sport.
“We are literally always together, we are teammates and we always push each other at the track,” said Cardwell.
Their journey in the sport came in two different times of their lives, Biggs since he was 6 and Cardwell starting six years ago.
The competition between both teens has not strained the pair’s friendship, in the contrary, it has made it stronger.
“BMX definitely brought us closer,” said Biggs
Athletes representing the U.S. team were announced by USA Cycling on July 6, where Cardwell and Biggs were listed to represent the U.S in the Junior division.
The teens were chosen after finishing in the top four in the BMX Nationals at the end of March, both competing in the Circle City National in Dothan, Alabama, the National Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the Dixieland Nationals in Georgia and the Midwest Nationals in Rockford, Illinois.
The teens were selected to race in each competition every two weeks with the eight best scores. Cardwell is currently sitting first in points and following behind in second place is Biggs.
“There are more people in North Carolina that do BMX, but we are the only ones that stand out,” said Biggs while speaking about BMX races in the state.
To prepare for the championships, both teens are in what they call a “training block,” where instead of participating in races every two weeks as a form of training, they do other conditioning activities to better prepare for the championships.
“We try to eat healthy to stay in shape and hit the gym. We train together three times a week,” said Cardwell, “My world pretty much revolves around BMX.”
A cycling sport, BMX derives from motocross racing. Those participating in the sport must ride a pedal BMX bicycle on a track alongside their competitors.
Both teens, aspire to make it into pros in the future and one day represent the U.S. in the BMX Olympics in Paris of 2024.
